Description Byzantine Empire. Constans II Pogonatus (the Bearded) (r. 641-668 AD), with Constantine IV AV (Gold) solidus. Mint of Constantinople; struck ca. 654-659 AD. Graded Choice AU 5/5 - 2/5 by NGC; satiny, prooflike fields. Constans II's reign was dominated by the rise of the Arabs and loss of much of Byzantine territory in the Middle East; he even moved the capital from Constantinople to Syracuse, Sicily in 663 AD, a move that stunned contemporaries. He was assassinated in the bath five years later. Design: Bust of Constans (on left), with long beard, and Constantine (on right) facing / Cross potent on three steps; CONOB (mintmark) below Reference: Sear 959. Dimensions: 20 mm / 4.42 gm Condition: NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 2/5, light graffito, brushed, clipped. The clipped notation is erroneous as this coin is of full weight. Virtually as struck.
