Description Byzantine Empire. Constans II Pogonatus (the Bearded) (r. 641-668 AD), with Constantine IV AV (Gold) solidus. Mint of Constantinople; struck ca. 654-659 AD. Graded Choice AU 5/5 - 2/5 by NGC; satiny, prooflike fields. Constans II's reign was dominated by the rise of the Arabs and loss of much of Byzantine territory in the Middle East; he even moved the capital from Constantinople to Syracuse, Sicily in 663 AD, a move that stunned contemporaries. He was assassinated in the bath five years later.
