The difference between a PP tank that holds acid for 15 years and one that stress-cracks at a weld seam within 3 years is determined by decisions made at the resin selection, extrusion, and quality control stages â before the sheet ever reaches a fabricator’s shop: Virgin vs recycled â the single biggest determinant of sheet quality. Recycled PP resin contains contaminants (other polymers mixed in during the recycling stream, degraded PP chains from previous thermal cycles, residual chemicals from the original application). A PP sheet made from recycled resin may look identical to virgin sheet â same color, same thickness, same surface finish â but welds differently (contaminants change the melt flow), bends differently (degraded molecular chains embrittle faster under stress), and resists chemicals differently (contaminants create preferential attack sites).
